“You are the expert in your life.”
APPROACH
At the core of my approach to counselling is a focus on building connection through trust and safety with whomever I meet. Without the foundation of a strong therapeutic relationship, anything else that we do is not going to work very well or last very long. It is important that I understand each person’s unique experience and view of their world, respecting individual differences and ways of dealing with life.
You are the expert in your life. I join our therapeutic conversation with knowledge and experience. The knowledge I bring is often referred to as therapeutic approaches, theory, techniques or tools – all of which support the goals you have and your process of change.
Instead of a “one approach for all” way of thinking, I will consider which approach to use based on the challenges you are experiencing, what I believe best suits your personality and learning style, what has been helpful or not helpful in previous counselling experiences.
My work is influenced by a variety of treatment approaches, including:
- Person-Centred Therapy
- Relational-Cultural Theory
- Polyvagal Theory
- Internal Family Systems (IFS)
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Solution-Focused Therapy
- Family Systems Theory
- Motivational Interviewing
- Trauma-Informed Practice
- Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
